In this episode of In With the New, Avril speaks with Carly Snider, the Executive Director of Pact Collective. They discuss the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste in the beauty industry.
The beauty industry creates about 120 billion units of plastic waste a year. Most of this comes from packaging that is flashy and excessive as well as products that have mixed materials, making it hard to recycle. Pact’s goal is to create ways to combat packaging waste. This is done through the beauty specific collection program, in which hard to recycle beauty empties are collected. The collection occurs in various ways, including in store collection bins and mail back options. This waste is then upcycled, downcycled or considered for a mechanical recycling solution.
