Adam Molson is the Vice President of Rental Communities and Sustainability at Daniels Corporation. Adam is leading Daniels Corporation in becoming one of the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA’s) low carbon housing developers.
The Toronto real estate development and building industry is responsible for producing 58% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. Adam speaks to how the Daniels Corporation has created a decarbonization roadmap to challenge themselves to reduce emissions by 2030 and become one of the GTA’s lowest carbon developers. They hope their roadmap can serve as a blueprint that other builders can use to hit their own carbon reduction targets.
Communicating the benefits of low carbon communities to consumers is important in not only gaining the trust of consumers but letting them know the values of the builder. Adam talks about how many companies tell consumers that they have to make a sacrifice in order to live more sustainable lives. Daniels Corporation believes that they can build homes with low carbon emissions and by communicating the benefits to the customer, the customer can decide if this is the right choice for them.
Buying a home is very expensive. If you ask people to pay more for something that is more environmentally friendly, many will not make the move. Adam focuses on the fact that the company does not make consumers pay more up front to purchase. They are provided with homes with lower carbon emissions at a better cost compared to competitors. Would anyone say no to a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option for their home?
